Today, I went to the Tama river, Tokyo, Japan. When I was walking along the river, I saw Little Terns. They hovered on the river, and dived straight down at the river to catch fish. Japanese name of this bird is "Aji-sashi", which means "bird that sticks Japanese horse mackerel (a kind of fish)". Because they flew so fast, I was not able to take good photos. According to Japanese Wikipedia, it nests at Eurasia continent, spends winter at Africa to Australia, then comes to Japan during summer. That's why I didn't see this bird during the winter. When I think about migration of birds, I feel mystery of the nature.
I found this hermit crab at the shore near the hotel that I stayed.Name of this hermit crab is Left-Handed Hermit Crab. I don't know whether this hermit crab is actually left handed. This crab has bright blue on its eyes and antennas.
Hawaii island is the newest island and largest island among all of the other Hawaiian Islands. The island is covered with lava. The island has a numerous number of lava tubes. Lava tubes are formed when an active low-viscosity lava flow develops a continuous and hard crust, which thickens and forms a roof above the still-flowing lava stream. We visited one of the lava tubes, Thurston Lava Tube, in Kilauea.Another lava tube, Kazumura Cave, Kazumura Cave is, at 61,420m (40 miles), the longest, and at 1,101m (3,614 ft), the deepest lava tube in the world. It is also located in Kilauea.Wow.
I like to just stand and listen to whispering voice of nature. At first, I don't see anything, but after a while, I always find another big world filled by small insects under the grasses. I like the moment. This shield bug is also very small. It is less than 1 cm. I didn't see it first. After a while, it appears from under a leave. Japanese name of this shield bug is Sukashi-Hime-Kamemushi. Its scientific name is Liorhyssus hyalinnus.
We stayed the Hakone hotel, which is located in front of the Lake Ashi. Our room was cheap, but we saw great scenery from our window, enjoyed Onsen (hot spring), and our room was really huge and relaxing (ceiling was about 3 m high!). We saw beautiful sunset from the hotel's garden drinking beer (see above photo). The lake is a crater lake that lies along the southwest wall of the caldera of Mount Hakone, a complex volcano.
We saw this butterfly at the Karuizawa wild bird forest. Japanese name of this butterfly is Ichi monji cho, which means a butterfly with "1 " of Chinese Character on its wings. Its scientific name is Limenitis camilla.
I found this moth at the Karuizawa wild bird forest. English common name of this moth is Nun moth or black-arched tussock moth. Does it look like nun? Yeah, maybe. Its scientific name is Lymantria monacha. Its Japanese name is non-ne maimai. It has sharp white and black patterns on its wings.
English common name of this plant is Large Periwinkle, Greater Periwinkle and Blue Periwinkle. Its scientific name is Vinca major. It is native to southern Europe, from Spain and southern France east to the western Balkans, and also in northeastern Turkey and the western Caucasus. It is an evergreen trailing vine.
We found this locust, when we went to cave of the winds. It was in a parking lot there. I tried to identify its name, I failed it. If you know name of this locust, please let me know. During I'm searching name of this locust, I found a interesting description about Rocky Mountain locust, which was extinct.
According to Wikipedia, the Rocky Mountain locust (Melanoplus spretus) was the most important locust species that ranged through almost the entire western half of the US (and some western portions of Canada) until the end of the 19th century. The insect may have produced larger swarms than any other locust species. One 1874 sighting famous to entomologists recorded a swarm 198,000 square miles (513,000 km²) in estimated size―greater than the area of California. According to The Guinness Book of Records under the heading 'greatest concentration of animals', the swarm must have contained at least 12.5 trillion insects with a total weight of 27.5 million tons. But less than 30 years later, the species was apparently extinct. The last recorded sighting of a live specimen was in 1902 in southern Canada. And because no one expected such a ubiquitous creature to become extinct, very few samples were ever collected. The cause of their extinction is disputed. It is possible that the plowing and irrigation by settlers disrupted the natural life cycle of the insects.
As I mentioned, buffaloes were almost extinct, and this insect was actually extinct. It is very sad. We should be very careful, since human have such a big influence to the nature. By the way, the locust that we found looks like the Rocky Mountain locust, isn't it? I know that it's impossible though.
We saw llamas in Colorado. The llama (Lama glama) is native to the Andes mountains in South America. But according to Wikipedia, llamas appear to have originated from the central plains of North America about 40 million years ago. They migrated to South America and Asia about 3 million years ago. By the end of the last ice age (10,000–12,000 years ago) camelids were extinct in North America. Due to importation from South America in the late 20th century, there are now over 100,000 llamas in the US and Canada. Wow. 100,000 llamas!!! In Japan, we see llamas only in zoo. But it seems that this animal is more popular in the US.
I introduced Black-Billed Magpie few days ago. When I took the above photo, I thought that it was a magpie again. But when I looked carefully, it did not have the distinguishable long tail. I checked it carefully, and found that it was a Lark Bunting, which is a Colorado state bird. Since my photo is not so great, please do Google image search to find better one, if you are interested in this bird. According to Wikipedia, Lark Bunting has a small gray bill and a white wing patch. Adult males in breeding plumage are black except for their white wing patch. Other birds are more sparrow-like in appearance. Thus, I saw an adult male in breeding plumage.
When I visited cave of the winds, that is located in central Colorado, I saw a chipmunk (left photo) on the very steep cliff (right photo). Colorado is home to five species of chipmunks; Colorado chipmunk, Hopi chipmunk, Uinta chipmunk, cliff chipmunk and the least chipmunk. The most widespread chipmunk in Colorado is the least chipmunk. So, this chipmunk can be least chipmunk. But I'm not sure. We can remove the cliff chipmunk probably, because it does not have clear stripes on its back. But other four species look almost identical. The Colorado chipmunk lives in southern Colorado and northward along the foothills of the Eastern Slope nearly to Wyoming. The Hopi chipmunk occurs on the Colorado Plateau. The Uinta chipmunk is a species of the central mountains. The range does not help me to identify the chipmunk. Please let me know, if you have any good idea to identify it.
This is also a kind of leaf beetle named "kibeti kubi hoso hamushi" in Japanese. Scientific name is Lema adamsii. The color of this beetle (yellow and black) is very vivid. This leaf beetle is probably endemic in Japan. But I'm not sure.
There are so many kinds of leaf beetles. The photo above is probably "akakubi hoso hamushi" in Japanese that means red-necked thin leaf beetle. Color variation of this leaf beetle is various. Scientific name of this insect is Lema diversa. It seems that there is no English common name. Probably, it is endemic in Japan. But I'm not sure.
I saw a butterfly named "Hikage chou" that means "butterfly that prefers shade" (see upper photo). I have introduced a very similar butterfly named "Hime jyanome" (see below photo). The difference between the two is pattern on their front wing (compare carefully!). "Hikage chou" doesn't have a big eye-like dot on its front wing, in contrast, "Hime jyanome" has it. Scientific name of "Hikage chou" is Lethe sicelis. It is endemic in Japan.
I've been introducing insects, so please enjoy this beautiful flower. I introduced this flower once only in Japanese article. So this time, I would like to write an English article too. Name of this flower is Lantana. It is native to tropical regions of the Americas and Africa. But it is so beautiful, so you see this flower in Japan as an ornamental flower.Lantana is also called Spanish Flag. I uploaded Spanish Flag just under the photos of Lantana. Do you think that the flag is similar to the flower?
I have been working until midnight everyday these days. I've been so tired. But day before yesterday, I saw a large brown cicada (scientific name is Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata) that just finished adult exclosion. I completely forgot that I was tired, since it was so beautiful like an angel. Please check my previous entry (Click here!), if you want to see this cicada after its wings get hard.
I found a good article about this locust in English. So I cite the article. Original article is from the Japan times (Click here).
* Japanese name: Shouryou-batta * Scientific name: Acrida cinerea antennata * Description: Although it is called the long-headed locust, this member of the grasshopper family of insects has a stranger appearance than the more familiar swarming locust. "Shouryou" refers (bafflingly) to the Buddhist word for the spirit of the dead, while "batta" means grasshopper. It has hugely long hind legs, and the body is 4-5 cm long in males, 7-8 cm long in females. The head is very long, sharp and triangular, tipped with two long antennae. This grasshopper comes in two color types, green and brown, but the head shape never leaves any doubt in identifying the species. * Where to find them: In grass, all over Japan, in summer and autumn. Long-headed locusts are often found in vacant lots around houses, but they are even more commonly heard. The insect rubs the inner surface of its hind legs against the outer surface of the forewings, making a "chiki-chiki" sound that accounts for its other name of chiki-chiki batta. * Special features: Females are bigger than males because they lay a large mass of eggs, surrounded in a foamy, protective substance. Eggs take more energy to produce than sperm, so females are bigger. In both sexes, the stilt-like hind legs are specialized to store energy like a coiled spring. This energy can be almost instantaneously unleashed if the insect is startled, and the sudden kick propels the animal away. Grasshoppers grow by molting, and just before and after the final molt to adulthood, the exoskeleton is soft and weak. This means that kicks cannot be performed with the same power, lest they damage the exoskeleton. Instead, the insect kicks by conventional muscle contraction, rather than releasing stored energy. After about two weeks the body is strong enough not to be damaged by kicking; the locust modifies its kicking behavior until its body is strong enough to cope.
From my pond, eight nymphs of lesser emperor emerged. I was surprised that this small pond (diameter is about 1m) raised eight of them. My parents luckily saw a moment of the emergence and took pictures. The above photos are from my father. This dragonfly is so beautiful, isn't it? I thank the dragonfly to come to my pond that locates in Tokyo and amused us. Japanese name of this dragonfly is "Kurosuji-ginyanma" that means lesser emperor with black stripes (There are several kinds of lesser emperors). Scientific name is Anax nigrofasciatus nigrofasciatus. This dragonfly is native to China, Philippine, and Japan.
This spider has its net on my pond at our garden. It looks like just an ordinary spider. But if you look closely, you will find that this spider has beautiful green legs. Japanese name is "Ko-shirokane-gumo" that means small platinum spider. As its name, it has a platinum back. But for me, green legs are more distinctive. This spider is probably native to Japan and does not have an English common name. Scientific name of this spider is Leucauge subblanda. These photos are from my father. My camera is great, but it doesn't have manual function. When I would like to take a picture like spiders, it is very difficult to focus. His manual camera is more useful in such cases.
I like flowers of "ladies' tresses". The pink cute flowers bloom spirally around its stem. It looks like women's braid as its name. Scientific name is Spiranthes sinensis. This plant belongs to orchid family. Japanese name is "neji-bana" that means "twisted flower" in Japanese.
Name of this spider is Lynx spider. Japanese name is "Sasa-gumo". Lynx spiders don't make nets, because they are hunting spiders that spend their lives on plants, flowers and shrubs. They rely on their keen eyesight to stalk, chase or ambush prey. I think that name of "lynx spider" describes their hunting style very well. I like the English name.
I found a lacecap hydrangea at the park. The flower looks like a lace cap in old Europe. So I think that the naming sense is good. This hydrangea is native to Japan. Japan has so many beautiful things that we can be proud of.
My cold is pretty much gone. I have a linger cough but will rest up this weekend and hopefully get rid of it."
