Azure-winged Magpie [名] オナガ

今日は久しぶりに近所の六郷用水沿いを散歩しました。子供の頃良く見かけたのですが、最近まったく見かけなかったオナガを久しぶりに見ました。青色が美しく、名前の通り尾が長くて目を魅きます。Wikipediaによると、「オナガは日本では分布を狭めており、1970年代までは本州全土および九州の一部で観察されたが、1980年代以降西日本で繁殖は確認されておらず、留鳥として姿を見ることはなくなった」そうです。「現在は本州の石川県以東、神奈川県以北で観察されるのみとなっている。わずか10年足らずで西日本の個体群が姿を消した原因はまったくわかっていない。」との事で、西日本にお住まいの方は、この鳥を見た事がないかもしれませんね。「食性は雑食で、昆虫や果実、種子などを常食する。」そうで、一枚目の写真では何やら黒っぽい細長いものを食べています。鳴き声は、綺麗な色に似つかわしくなく、「ギューイギュイギュイ」「ゲー、ギー」など大きな濁声で鳴きます。英名はAzure-winged Magpie。Azureは空色の事で、Magpieはカササギ。「空色の羽をしたカササギ」の意です。学名はCyanopica cyanaだそうです。



Today, I saw Azure-winged Magpies. I saw this bird when I was a kid. But recently, I hadn't seen this bird. So I'm glad that this bird is still living in Tokyo. It's wing is beautiful blue, and it's tail is very long. Japanese name of this bird is O-naga, which means long tail. Scientific name of this bird is Cyanopica cyana. According to Japanese Wikipedia, the bird had distributed entire Japan until 1970's. But after 1980's, it only distribute northeast region in Japan. So it disappered from west side of Japan within only 10 years. No one knows the reason. It's a mystery. This bird is omnivorous. In the first picture, the bird is eating something black. Although color of its wings are beautiful, its voice is not so beautiful.

昨日の夕日はすごかったです。私の職場（８階建て）の屋上から撮った写真です。刻々と色が移り変わる燃えるような空。流れ往く雲。下の写真は少し前に同じ場所から撮った富士山です。東京のど真ん中にいると、関東平野が山に囲まれているのを忘れがちですが、こうして屋上に上ると遠くに山並みが見えてやっぱり私は大自然の中にいるんだなって思って安らぎます。




Yesterday, I saw a gorgeous sunset from rooftop of the building that my laboratory is in. The color of the sunset was changing and clouds were moving. The scenery was like unreal. It was so beautiful. The lower photo was taken one week ago or so from the same location. Mt. Fuji was beautiful at that day. I sometimes forget that Tokyo is surrounded by mountains. But when I come to this rooftop of this building, I remember I'm in the big nature and feel good.

Hamilton's strawberry bush [名] マユミ (真弓、檀）

今週の火曜日は祝日でしたね。実験の合間を縫って、自然教育園に行って来ました。まだ紅葉には早かったけれど、いろいろな植物が実をつけていて楽かったです。でも植物には疎いんで、あんまりなんの実か分かりませんでした。下の写真の実は、「マユミ」という植物の実です。なんで分かったかというと、可愛い実だなって思って写真を撮っていたら、知らないおじさんが、「それ、マユミって言うんだよ。」って教えてくれたんで。Wikipediaによると、マユミは日本と中国の林に自生しているそうで、英名はHamilton's strawberry bush。学名はEuonymus hamiltonianus Wall.。材質が強く、よくしなるので、古来より弓の材料として知られ、これが名前の由来となったそうです。新芽は山菜として利用されるそうですが、種子に含まれる脂肪油には薬理作用の激しい成分が含まれており、少量でも吐き気や下痢、大量に摂取すれば筋肉の麻痺を引き起こすため、種子は食べてはならないそうです。



These are fruits of Hamilton's strawberry bush. Scientific name is Euonymus hamiltonianus Wall. Japanese name is Mayumi. Mayumi is often used for girl's name in Japan. "Ma" means real, and "Yumi" means bow. Because this tree is very strong and flexible, it is used for making bows in Japan. That's why this tree is called "Mayumi", which means "real bow". This tree is native to Japan and China. Japanese eats boiled buds of this tree (I did not know and probably never had one). But seeds of this tree includes toxins which cause nausea, diarrhea, and also paralysis of muscles. So please don't eat the seeds.

多摩川の夕日

今日は久しぶりに多摩川に行きました。夕日がとっても綺麗でした。日の入りは４時半頃なんですね。幻想的な写真が撮れたので嬉しくなりました。色もほとんど無修正です。



I saw a beautiful sunset in the Tama river in Tokyo, today. Sunset here is about 4:30 pm now. I did not adjust color of these photos. The scenery was just so fantastic.

Cherry tree from Washington DC [名] ワシントンDCから里帰りした桜の木

目黒の庭園美術館で見つけて一番嬉しかったのはこの桜の木です。日本がワシントンDCに桜を送ったのが1912年。それから80年余り経って、ワシントンDCのポトマック公園から里帰りした桜の木だそうです。「君もワシントンDCで、アメリカ人を楽しませて来たんだね。」って嬉しく思いました。ワシントンDCの桜は本当に美しいです。ワシントンDCに４年いて、まったくホームシックにならなかったのは、春には桜が咲いて、秋には美しい紅葉があって、日本と同じように四季があったからかもしれません（アメリカは広いので、気候は土地によってさまざまです）。まさか、あの桜が目黒に里帰りしていたとは。ちょっと驚きでした。



I found a cherry tree from Washington DC in Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum at Meguro, Tokyo. That was a little surprise for me. Japan sent 3000 cherry trees to Washington DC in 1912. This tree was one of these. After 80 years, this tree was back to its home town. I wanted to say to the tree "You had amused many Americans in Washington DC. How wonderful you are."

Anemonopsis [名] レンゲショウマ

こちらは庭園美術館に咲いていたレンゲショウマの花です。レンゲショウマは日本特産の1属1種の花で、レンゲショウマ属はこれ1種のみだそうです。真ん中の端が薄紫のところが花で、その周りの白い花びらのように見える所は実は萼だそうです。萼が花びらのように見える花って意外と多いですね。英名はAnemonopsis macrophyllaと言うそうです。



This is a flower of Anemonopsis. Anemonopsis is a monotypic genus in the family Ranunculaceae, containing only the species Anemonopsis macrophylla. This plant is native to Japan. The central part of the flower with violet fringe is the real flower, and its surrounding white petal like parts are actually calyxes like a dogwood.

Caryopteris divaricata [名] カリガネソウ (雁金草)

この雄しべが長く伸びて上から垂れ下がった特徴的な花はカリガネソウです。こちらも目黒の自然教育園に咲いていました。花の名前の由来は、雁が飛んでいるように見えるからだそうです。蜂が花びらにとまると、この雄しべが蜂の背中に花粉をつけるんだそうです。とても良く出来た構造ですね。分布は東アジア（日本、朝鮮半島、中国）で、英語の　common name はなさそうです。学名は Caryopteris divaricataです。



This plant name is Karigane sou in Japanese. I was not able to find its English common name. Its scientific name is Caryopteris divaricata. It distributes in Eastern Asia including Japan, Korea, and China. Shape of this flower is very unique. Its stamen hung in front of the flower. When a bee sit on the flower, the stamen touches on the bee's back for pollination.

Great Burnet [名] ワレモコウ

これはワレモコウの花です。目黒の自然教育園に可憐に咲いていました。英語の common name は Great Burnet。Wikipediaによると、「根はタンニンやサポニン多くを含み、天日乾燥すれば収斂薬になり止血や火傷、湿疹の治療に用いられる」のだそうです。



These are flowers of Great Burnet. Its Japanese name is Waremokou. According to Japanese Wikipedia, its root includes tannin and saponin, and thus used as adstringentia to stop bleeding, treat burn injury or eczema.

Atami [名] 熱海

先週は横浜のみなとみらいで開かれた学会に参加して来ました。最終日の夜は熱海に移動して、研究室の同窓会がありました（なんと１００人以上いました！）。ちょっと早く着いちゃって、後輩のデジカメを借りて会場近辺を一人でプラプラしていたら、同じく暇を持て余していた同じ研究室のインド人ポスドクが一人でプラプラしているのを発見！彼はヨーロッパ留学経験ありで、お互い日本の文化をいろいろ客観的に見れたりして、似た者同士で暇つぶしに海辺を散策。この日は奇しくも中秋の名月。３枚目の写真にまん丸の御月様が写っているのが見えますでしょうか？熱海は箱根や軽井沢ほど美しくはなかったですが、それでも電車で都内から１時間以内で来る事が出来る海が見られる場所としては、なかなか良い場所でしたよ〜。



I visited Atami in Japan on this last Saturday to join an alumni association party of our laboratory. Since I had a little time before the party, I was walking around the hotel where the party will be held. I met an Indian postdoc when I was walking around the hotel. He had been in Europe for few years, so we talked a lot about difference between Westerner's culture and Japanese culture. I really had a wonderful time. We saw the beautiful full moon at that night (see the third picture) . I think that Atami is a nice place to visit, if you don't have enough time to go far away from Tokyo. It only took less than 1 hour to get there. I'm thinking to visit there alone by myself in the near future.

Tricyrtis affinis [名] ヤマジノホトトギス

こちらは自然教育園に咲いていたヤマジノホトトギスです。秋らしい上品な佇まいの花です。学名はTricyrtis affinisです。



Scientific name of this plant is Tricyrtis affinis. Shape of its flowers are very unique.

Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum [名] 東京都庭園美術館

自然教育園の隣にある東京都庭園美術館に初めて行ってみました。あまりにも自然教育園が好きで、東京都庭園美術館はいつも後回し。でも芸術の秋だしって事で。今美術館でやっている「Stitch by Stitch 針と糸で描く私」っていう展示は、私には難しすぎました。いろいろな事してる人がいるんだなって程度（すみません）。で、ワクワクして庭園へ。う〜ん。やっぱり自然教育園の方が楽しいぞ。どちらが楽しいかは人それぞれですが。庭園に置かれていた彫刻の写真を撮って、私なりにアレンジしてみました。こんな彫刻がありますよ〜。実物を見たい方は東京都庭園美術館へGo! 庭園だけなら200円で楽しめます。

Desmodium podocarpum [名]　ヌスビトハギ

自然教育園で面白い形の種を見つけました！ヌスビトハギの種だそうです。なんでヌスビト（盗人）なのか？諸説あるようですが、種の形が盗人の足跡に似ているとか（古来の泥棒は足音を立てないように、足裏の外側だけを地面に着けて歩いたとのことで、その時の足跡に似ている。ホント？）、種の茶色の部分は毛が密生していて衣服に貼り付くので、こっそり貼り付くところからとか（触ってみたらベタベタしていました）。いずれにせよ、動けない植物が種を遠くへ運ぶ工夫は面白いですね。この植物の学名はDesmodium podocarpum というそうです。



Shape of this plant's seeds is very unique. Ancient Japanese thought that the shape looked like footprint of thief (really???) and named the plant "nusubito hagi". "Nusubito" means in Japanese. Its seeds are very sticky and attach animals' hair or human clothes to expand. Its scientific name is Desmodium podocarpum.

Nephila clavata [名] ジョロウグモ

秋と言えばジョロウグモの季節ですね！？自然教育園にもいっぱいいましたよ。よくよく見てみると、いろいろな模様の個体がいますね。写真左上の雌は大きかったです。一般的に雌は17 mm - 30 mmですが、この雌は体が 40 mm、足まで入れると 60 mmくらいあるように思いました。ジョロウグモは体が縦長のが多いですが、この雌ときたら、お腹がまん丸。迫力満点でした。実は昔、段ボール箱でジョロウグモを飼っていました。バッタを投げ込むとものすごい速さでぐるぐる巻きにするのは、圧巻でした。今の子達はこういう体験をしてるのかな？なお、ジョロウグモの学名はNephila clavataというそうです。



I saw many big spiders named "Joro-gumo" in Japanese. Its scientific name is Nephila clavata. Usually female of this spider is around 17 mm - 30 mm (male is smaller). But I found a larger female spider compared with the average (see left upper photo). Body of this female was about 40 mm. If you include its legs, it was about 60 mm. Whew. I noticed that there are so many complicated patterns on its back. When I was a kid, I was feeding this spider in my house. I used a big cardboard box as their house. When I threw locusts into its web, it caught the locusts and swathed the locusts in its spider silk amazingly quick. I was so impressed. I wonder that today's children have this kind of nature experience.

Sickle-bearing bush-cricket [名] ツユムシ
Sickle [名] 鎌

夏も終わりを告げ、虫の数もどんどん減って来ました。寂しいですね。こちらは自然教育園にいたツユムシ。華奢な感じのする虫です。英語の common name は　Sickle-bearing bush-cricket。Sickle（鎌）は雌の産卵管を指すのでしょうか？おそらくこの写真のツユムシは産卵管が見えないので雄ですね。学名はPhaneropter falcataというそうです。



This is a Sickle-bearing bush-cricket. Female of this insect has a big ovipositor. I guess that the "sickle" indicates the ovipositor. The insect in the upper photo is probably male, since it probably does not have the ovipositor. Its scientific name is Phaneropter falcata. Its Japanese name is Tsuyu mushi, which means dew insect.

Eupatorium lindleyanum [名] サワヒヨドリ

自然教育園で見つけたサワヒヨドリという花です。沢などの湿った土地に生えるから「サワ」が付くそうですが、なんでヒヨドリなんでしょう？鳥のヒヨドリに似ています？この花の学名はEupatorium lindleyanumというそうです。



This is a flower of Sawahiyodori in Japanese. "sawa" means small brook, "hiyodori" means Brown-eared Bulbul, which is a bird name. I don't know whether this flower looks like the bird. Its scientific name is Eupatorium lindleyanum.

Impatiens textorii [名]　ツリフネソウ

こちらも自然教育園に咲いていたツリフネソウ。ホウセンカと同じ仲間で，熟した果実にちょっと触れるだけで種を勢いよくはじき飛ばすんだそうです。学名はImpatiens textorii です。Impatiensはラテン語で、Inpatient (我慢できない)を表し、ちょっと触れただけで種が我慢できずに弾ける様に由来するようです。Impatiens属の仲間は、"Touch-me-not"と呼ばれているようです。これも触ると種が弾けちゃうところからでしょうね。



These are flowers of Impatiens toxtorii. Impatiens is latin for "impatient". When we touch its ripe fruits, seeds are scattered like bombs. The name is derived from this feature. Common name of this family is "Touch-me-not", according to Wikipedia. Japanese name of this plant is Tsuri-fune sou, which means grass looks like a fisherman's boat.

basket worm [名] みの虫

小さい頃は良くいたみの虫。最近めっきり少なくなりました。今日は自然教育園に行ったのですが、草の実をまとったおしゃれなみの虫がいましたよ。秋っぽいですね。英語で実の虫は basket wormと言うそうです。



I found a fashionable basket worm today. It wears a red berry! Japanese call basket worm "Mino mushi". "Mino" means old Japanese rein wear made of straw. "Mushi" means insect. Ancient Japanese probably thought that the insect looked like wearing the rein wear.

Grammodes geometrica [名]　ナカグロクチバ

このとても特徴的な模様を持つ蛾は、ナカグロクチバ。蛾とは思えない美しさです。学名はGrammodes geometrica。一度見たら忘れられない蛾です。




This moth has a very distinguishable pattern on its wings. Japanese name of this moth is Naka-guro-kuchiba. Its scientific name is Grammodes geometrica.

Hymenia recurvalis [名] シロオビノメイガ

以前はあまり気にもしなかった蛾ですが、ちょっと目を留めるとその種類の多い事！みんなこの世に生を授かった大切な仲間だと思うと、蛾とは言え愛おしく思えます。こちらはシロオビノメイガ。「草原に極めて多い普通種で、人家周辺のちょっとした草むらでも見られる」との事で、多摩川にもたくさんいました。この蛾の学名はHymenia recurvalisと言うそうです。



Japanese name of this moth is Shiro-obi-no-meiga. Its scientific name is Hymenia recurvalis. This moth is very common in Japan.

Aulacophora femoralis [名] ウリハムシ

こちらも 1 cm にも満たない小さな昆虫。でも綺麗なオレンジ色なので、目を引きますね。成虫はウリ類の葉っぱを食べ、幼虫はウリ類の根を食べるのでウリハムシ。学名は、Aulacophora femoralisと言うそうです。



This is also a small inset, which is less than 1 cm. Japanese name of this insect is Uri Hamushi, which means a leaf beetle that eats gourd. The adults eat leaves of gourd, and its nymphs eat roots of the plant. The insect is brilliant orange. Its scientific name is Aulacophora femorali.

Liorhyssus hyalinnus [名] スカシヒメヘリカメムシ

多摩川の河原に佇んでしばらくじっとしていると、最初何もいないように見えた足下に小さな虫達の別世界が現れます。種類も同定できないような小さな小さな生き物達がせわしなく動いています。こちらはスカシヘリカメムシ。これも小さなカメムシで 1 cmにもなりません。最初はこのカメムシも見えなかったのですが、葉っぱの影から現れました。このカメムシの学名はLiorhyssus hyalinnus。羽の先が透けていて、丸い黒いでっぱりが二つ付いているのが特徴的です。



I like to just stand and listen to whispering voice of nature. At first, I don't see anything, but after a while, I always find another big world filled by small insects under the grasses. I like the moment. This shield bug is also very small. It is less than 1 cm. I didn't see it first. After a while, it appears from under a leave. Japanese name of this shield bug is Sukashi-Hime-Kamemushi. Its scientific name is Liorhyssus hyalinnus.

Yemma exilis [名] イトカメムシ

こちらはイトカメムシ。先程紹介したヒメイトカメムシとほぼ同じ大きさですが、足に縞縞模様がありません。学名は、Yemma exilisというそうです。



This is also a shield bug. Japanese name of this shield bug is Ito-Kamemushi. Hime-Ito-Kamemushi and this Ito-Kamemshi is very similar, but this shield bug does not have stripes on its legs. Its scientific name is Yemma exilis.

Metacanthus pulchellus [名] ヒメイトカメムシ

こちらは糸のように細い足をもつヒメイトカメムシ。足に縞縞模様があります。体長は 1 cmくらい。とても小さくて妖精のようです。学名はMetacanthus pulchellusと言うそうです。



You may be surprised, but this is a kind of shield bug. Japanese name of this insect is Hime-Ito-Kamemushi. It has stripes on its legs. Scientific name is Metacanthus pulchellus.

Japanese Lilysquatter [名]セスジイトトンボ
squatter [名] 無断居住者、無権利居住者、うずくまる人、大牧場主

こちらは多摩川の土手にいたイトトンボ。セスジイトトンボの雌だと思うのですが、イトトンボは見分けるのが難しいですね。イトトンボは見つけるのが大変だから、見つけた時に嬉しくなってしまう昆虫ですね。英名はJapanese Lilysquatter。日本のユリの無断居住者？良い名前なのか悪い名前なのか。学名はCercion hieroglyphicumと言うそうです。



I saw a damselfly at the bank of the Tama river. Name of this damselfly is Japanese Lilysquatter. Is this a good name or bad name? Scientific name of this damselfly is Cercion hieroglyphicum.

Brown huntsman spider [名] アシダカグモ

今日は久しぶりに多摩川に行きました。葉っぱの影に馬鹿でかいクモがいて、びっくりしました。足を広げた大きさは10 cm以上ありました。「でかいクモ」でグーグル検索したら、アシダカグモがヒットしました。日本で一二を争う大型のクモだそうです。お腹の下にはどうやら卵嚢を抱えているようです。Wikipediaによると雌は卵嚢を口に咥え、子グモが孵化するまで餌を食べずに持ち歩き、孵化直前にこれを壁などに貼り付け、暫くの時間近くにいて見守るとの事です。けなげですね。大きくて怖そうですが、人間を噛んだりすることはなく、人家内外に住まうゴキブリやハエ、小さなネズミなど衛生害虫を捕食してくれる「益虫」だそうです。このクモの英語名はBrown huntsman spider。日本以外にも暖かいアジアやカリブ海の島々、南東アメリカ合衆国、そしてオーストラリアにいるそうです。



I went to bank of the Tama river today. I saw a huge spider there. It was more than 10 cm! The spider name is Brown huntsman spider. It distributes in subtropical parts of the world, including Asia, Réunion Island, the Caribbean islands, the Southeastern US, and Australia. It doesn't bite you. It eats cockroach, fly, and small mouse. The spider in the above photo has eggs under her berry. She doesn't eat until baby spiders are born. She is a very good mother.

Onomaus lautus [名] アカアシカスミガメ

こちらは軽井沢の雲場池の周辺に咲いていた綺麗なオレンジ色の花にとまっていたカメムシです。調べてみたら、アカアシカスミガメというカメムシのようです。学名は Onomaus lautus。模様がとても綺麗なカメムシですね。



We found this shield bug on a flower at lakeside of the Kumoba pond in Karuizawa. Japanese name of this insect is Akaashi kasumi game. Its scientific name is Onomaus lautus. The pattern on its back was very beautiful.

Helwingia japonica var. japonica [名] ハナイカダ

軽井沢で野鳥の森を散策中、葉っぱの葉脈に実が付いている不思議な植物を見かけました。最初虫が作る「虫こぶ」かと思いましたが、虫こぶはもっとランダムに葉っぱに出来るはず。ウェブサーチをしていたら、ハナイカダ（花筏）という植物が、これにそっくりな事を見つけました。コチラのサイトによると、「ハナイカダは葉の中央に花を咲かせ、実を付けるおもしろい植物である。葉を筏に見立て、その上に乗る花や実を筏の上に乗る人に見立てたもので、花や実を付けている姿を見れば、忘れがたい植物の１つである。日本各地の水分条件のよい場所に生育し、樹高は数ｍになる灌木である。雌雄異株であり、雄株では葉の上に多数の雄花ができるが、雌株では多くは１つの花しか付かない。花弁数は４が普通であるが、３枚の事もある。」との事です。学名は、Helwingia japonica var. japonica。ちなみにHelwingia（ヘルウィンジア）は、18世紀のドイツの牧師「Helwing さん」の名前にちなんでいるそうです。



When we were walking in the wild bird forest at Karuizawa, we saw very strange leaves. The leaves have their fruit on them. This plant is called Helwingia. Scientific name of this particular one is Helwingia japonica var. japonica. Helwing is a name of German priest. According to this web site, this plant is native to the Himalayas and eastern Asia, all of the species in the genus have simple leaves and an unusual manner of flower growth. The plants are dioecious (male and female flowers on separate plants), and the flowers appear to arise directly from the leaves, the stems of the flowers being joined to the midribs of the leaves. The male flowers are clustered in a group; the female flowers are solitary or few.

Protaetia orientalis submarumorea [名] シロテンハナムグリ
Flower chafer [名] ハナムグリ
chafe [動] こすりつける

仕事から帰って来たら、家の玄関先にいたハナムグリです。おそらくシロテンハナムグリ (学名: Protaetia orientalis submarumorea) だと思います。でもとても良く似たシラホシハナムグリ (学名: Protaetia brevitarsis brevutarsis) かもしれません。見分け方としては、シロテンハナムグリとくらべて、シラホシハナムグリは白い斑が「への字状〜集合状」であることが特徴だそうです。またシラホシハナムグリは、シロテンハナムグリより頭部先端が水平、後翅が紫色を帯びる、上翅下端が尖るなどの特徴があるんだそうです。ウェブ上の写真を見ましたが、区別はとても難しいです。ちなみに英語でハナムグリはFlower chafer。Chafeは「こすりつける」という意味の動詞なので、花に体をこすりつけている虫という意味のようです。



When I went back from work, I found a flower chafer at front door of my house. Japanese name of this insect is probably Shiroten Hanamuguri (scientific name is Protaetia orientalis submarumorea). But there is another very similar flower chafer named Shirahoshi hanamuguri (scientific name is Protaetia brevitarsis brevutarsis). I compared photos of the two flower chafer posted on web sites. But it's very difficult to distinguish.

Komainu (Chinese guardian lions) [名] 狛犬

旧軽井沢の雑踏を逃れ、一本奥の道に逃げ込むと、とても静かな諏訪神社がありました。神社によくあるように狛犬が二匹。そこでアメリカ人の友達が、「狛犬って一方が"あ"って言ってて、もう一方が"うん"って言ってるって知ってる？"あ"で始まって"ん"で終わるからだよっと。」と教えてくれました。昔参加したツアーで聞いたそうです。私は全く知りませんでした。少し気になって調べた所、仏教用語で阿吽（あうん）と言う時は、サンスクリット語のマントラが元になっており、自然に口を開いたときの発生がa、閉じたときの発生がm、なので、始まりから終わり、そこから宇宙の始まりから終わりのひとつのまとまりをさす語として「オーム」と呼び神聖な言葉とされているんだそうです。そのオームが中国にわたり、阿吽と漢字表記されるようになったそうです。日本の狛犬はこの阿形（口を開いて"あ"と言っている右の犬)、吽形（口を開いて"ん"と言っている左の犬)を表しているのですね。今まで気がつかなかったので何か大発見した気分です。今後狛犬を見かけたら注意してみます。ちなみに英語のwikipediaには狛犬は雌雄のペアで、雄は玉（flower of life) に足を載せており、雌は子供 (cycle of life) に足を載せているとの記述がありました。写真を見てみると、なるほど一匹が玉に足を載せていて、もう一匹の足の下には子供がいるようです。




We visited the Suwa shrine in Karuizawa. There were two Komainus (Chinese guardian lions) in the shrine. My American friend told me that right dog (lion) is saying "阿 (a)" and another one is saying "吽 (un)". It means beginning to the end. I did web search later, and he was right. In Mantra written by Sanskrit, the pair of "a" and "un (m)" means "from beginning to the end", indicating "om", which means universe. Chinese imported this concept and described it as 阿吽 (a-un). Then Japanese imported it and made these lions. I found another interesting description in English Wikipedia. According to the Wikipedia, the lions are always presented in pairs of a female and male. The male lion has his right paw on a ball, which represents the "Flower of life" The female is essentially identical, but has a single cub under her left paw, representing the cycle of life. I did not know these facts. Next time, I'll check it carefully.

White dragon shrine [名] 白龍神社

こちらは九頭龍神社から10分程歩くとある白龍神社。白い鳥居は珍しいですね。九頭龍神社から白龍神社への道はなかなか素敵で、かわいい小鳥もいましたよ。



This is the White dragon shrine (白龍神社: Haku ryu jinjya) in Hakone. You can walk from the nine headed shrine to this shrine. It was about 10 min walk. The small path connecting the two shrine was pretty nice. There were lots of cute birds singing and flying.
